Hi all, Just as a reminder - we are starting the series of Virtual MPI Forum meetings again (see also my previous email to the forum). The next call is on Wednesday at 10am US Central time (as usual) and we’ll be discussing (among other things) how to modify our rules, so we can move forward during the Corona travel restrictions. Hence, it would be great if most of you could make it, so we get a complete picture of how everyone thinks about the ideas. MPI-Forum: Next Steps and Meeting Options

Hi all, First of all, I hope everyone is doing well. I imagine most of you are under some kind of limitations and/or in home office and I hope you were able to adjust well! With the current situation regarding Corona/COVID-19 we have to face the fact that our planned MPI Forum meetings may not be happening as planned, which of course impacts our timeline for MPI 4.0, as well as related activities. On the other hand, things are too unsure to sit this out and only wait for things to get better, and hence we need to find a way to keep moving forward, even if this is only virtual. Bill, Wesley and I met on Wednesday (over the web, of course) and discussed some options, which we would like to bring to the whole forum. The core is a proposal to hold, if necessary, the next meeting, worst case the next two meetings, virtually. This would, of course, require some rule changes, but we think we found a way to do this while still preserving the spirit of our rules and the usual “way of the MPI Forum”. Wesley has put together some text for this under the following PR: https://github.com/mpi-forum/procedures/pull/5 <https://github.com/mpi-forum/procedures/pull/5> We will discuss these new rules in the next virtual meeting (see below for more on that) and then - if applicable - vote on it in one of the following meetings. Whether we need to hold a virtual meeting instead of a real face to face is more or less dictated by our associated events: the Munich meeting will be virtual depending on ISC and whether people can travel to that, and the Austin meeting will be dependent on EuroMPI/USA (although we really hope, that things are back up and running again by then). As for meetings until then, we will restart our regular Wednesday meetings (at 10am CT) as of next week. MPI Chapter committee signoffs needed

To everyone in the MPI Forum, but especially the chairs of the MPI Chapter Committees, There are a number of updates that the Forum agreed to apply to the MPI standard that need to be reviewed and signed off by the chapter committees. The next group of these are the Fortran style changes, restricted to *not* include the change in lettercase for the Fortran keywords. As some of these had to be disentangled from commits that both fixed style issues and lettercase, these need to be reviewed again. They were posted quite a while back, but only a few reviews were received. In retrospect, I needed to set up a separate column in the signoff spreadsheet, which I’ve now done. You will find that in Column E, labeled “Editor Fortran style updates (revised)”; the spreadsheet is in the same place: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qPAREYgeuSCMtU-EQniDilrHIYb8W0-f6Qz… Please do the following (if you are a chapter chair): 1) If everything is fine with the changes, enter YES in the column and row for your chapter(s). 2) If you find a problem that needs to be changed (not something that you want to add), then: a) Enter NO b) Enter a comment on the PR page ( https://github.com/mpi-forum/mpi-standard/pull/145 ) about the issue c) If I am able to make the correction, change your entry to YES 3) ANY OTHER ENTRY WILL BE CONSIDERED A NO. This is the same interpretation used for the other reviews - and using this sheet to communicate changes has already slowed down the process of applying these edits. If you are on a chapter committee, please help your chapter chair. Others are welcome to review and communicate issues either on the PR page or with the appropriate chapter chair. I’d like to apply the Fortran style changes as soon as possible, and certainly within a week (April 1st, an appropriate day). Thanks for your help! Hey Jeff, I’ve been talking about this with Martin and Bill Gropp to try to come up with a couple of options. We’re still working on figuring some details of what we can do so we can present them for the forum soon. Since we don’t meet again in person until June, I think we have some time to make the final decision, but it’s probably reasonable to say that people shouldn’t buy plane tickets. I assume everyone is aware that all the events and all the travel are being cancelled and why. This includes standards body activities like ISO C++. Many companies, including Intel, are strongly discouraging if not outright banning certain classes of travel. Given that it may be required to amend the MPI rules or obtain extraordinary dispensation from the steering committee, it seems prudent to start discussing our mitigation plans for the June meeting in Munich. Call for short talks at the Q2 2020 PMIx Standard Quarterly Administrative Steering Committee (ASC) Meeting

Hi all, The PMIx Administrative Steering Committee (ASC) is soliciting short talks from researchers and practitioners whose work is related to the PMIx standard interface for inclusion in the second-quarter PMIx ASC meeting (meeting information below) on April 15. We encourage presentations demonstrating novel application or optimization of the PMIx interface, as well as presentations that introduce new use cases or other issues for broad discussion. Selected speakers will share their work and ideas with the PMIx community which could result in shaping the future direction of the PMIx standard or related efforts. The objective of the PMIx standard is to provide an implementation-independent specification to facilitate interaction between applications, tools, and middleware and system runtime environments. The interface focuses on supporting application launch and wire-up; supporting tools that wish to inspect, steer, and/or debug parallel applications; providing interfaces to manage dynamic workload applications, to support fault tolerance and cross-library coordination; and facilitate communication across container boundaries. We encourage anyone interested in sharing ideas or research related to these topics at our upcoming meeting to email Josh Hursey (jhursey(a)us.ibm.com) and Kathryn Mohror (kathryn(a)llnl.gov<mailto:[email protected]>) by April 1, 2020. Include a title, presenter information, and a short abstract in your email.
