Dear all – The IDEAS-ECP Productivity project has launched an informal panel series on ‘Strategies for Working Remotely’, to take place on selected Friday afternoons, as demand and availability permit. In the second installment of the IDEAS-ECP panel discussion series, we bring together four ECP staff members, a new staff member on-boarding with a National Lab, and a Montessori educator to share ideas and resources. Panelists will make brief introductory comments followed by open discussion. Performing this job when working remotely during a pandemic in a house with a high school senior, college senior, and fellow scientist/manager/husband Tom (see bio below) requires staking out the quietest room in the house to perform a range of calls. On these calls, she attempts to assure her staff that its ok to let the kids cry in the background and asks for clarity from her management to guide her through the unforeseen logistical issues for 100 people to work remotely and 20 staff to risk their health to continue their work onsite. During this exercise, Tom and the kids also have many online meetings/classes/gaming and she thanks herself daily that her husband Tom successfully argued to upgrade the family internet to 100Gb fiber just last year. The beagle enjoys the new family schedule and has learned that the kids give in to the cute dog face so she now eats about 10 times a day. Thomas Evans leads work at ORNL on energy applications in ECP. He is working remotely during a pandemic in a house with a high school senior, college senior, and fellow scientist/manager/wife Kate (see bio above). Madeline Heroux is an educator with experience tutoring junior high, high school and college students in the US and Japan. She is presently at Step-by-Step Montessori school in Minneapolis, MN, working with young children. Her most recent efforts are focused on the transition from in-person to remote learning. In what can seem like an impossible challenge at times, she has been working closely with parents and children alike to form schedules, activities, and structure that works best for them. Lindsey Hughes just transitioned to a systems engineer role supporting the W80-4. She and her husband have worked at Sandia National Laboratories for 10 years. She is currently working a part time schedule primarily from home. She has three kids under the age of six and two dogs keeping things interesting in the background. Her husband is working full time from the home as well. Lindsey has served as board member for the Sandia Parents Group for 3 years. AI/ML ASCR FOAs

Hi Everyone, As you know there are two DOE ASCR FOAs out on AI/ML. One has a preproposal date for May 1 (Call 1: scientific ML for modeling and simulations), the other for May 6 (Call 2: decision support for complex systems). There is an associated BRN report that the calls refer to explicitly; this report identified 6 priority research directions, PRD 1 through 6. Call 1 is about PRD 5 and Call 2 about PRD 6. It is clear from the FOAs that they are about new methods and are both methods-oriented, coming from a mostly applied math/stats direction. Please read the FOAs closely; do not write a knee-jerk preproposal. These calls are not about funding some standard application or using/extending an existing framework. Thoughtful proposals are likely to be rewarded. Some people have talked to me about responding to these calls. I would strongly suggest a meeting with Stefan Wild to coordinate with the other computing divisions in CELS. Tim and I will reach out to him. Dear CPS, We think the division might reasonably submit a few survey responses as input to the DOE tiger team that is helping FEMA as described in email thread below. We're looking for relevant code capabilities and technical POCs who can fill in survey details with description of applicability. The survey itself references these areas: Epidemiology Supply Chain Molecular Dynamics "Omics" Analysis Image Analysis Economics Manufacturing Fluid Dynamics Data Set Other: Two examples that I can think of might be: * NAMD (MD) * Nek5000 (CFD) Have a look at the survey. Hi Salman, I am submitting two technical papers: "Large Scale Parallel QAOA Quantum Simulator" and "Parallelization and Optimization of DFT Code for Biochemical Applications". Both papers are in very good shape. I am also co-organizing a SC20 workshop with Travis Humble from ORNL: "First International Workshop on Quantum Computing Software". It is already accepted with great reviews. On the related note, I will most likely organize a tutorial and workshop for IEEE Quantum Week: https://qce.quantum.ieee.org/ I expect acceptance given that the chair (Hausi A. Müller) invited me to participate.
