Examples of implosions where this physics is relevant include the developing hot spot in inertial confinement fusion capsules and the collapsing cores of massive stars. An extension of perturbation theory to include the effects of a time-dependent mean flow demonstrates that standard instability results for an equilibrium system generalize naturally to these systems. The theory provides a prediction of the onset of buoyancy instability and an intuitive picture of its behavior in a complex flow. Bio: Bryan received his PhD in physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2005 and spent two years as a post-doc in the Astronomy Department at the University of California Berkeley. He was a staff scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 5/07-5/18 and is currently a Systems Engineer at Northrop Grumman. CPS meeting topics

Hi Everyone, We'll go over a few things at tomorrow's meeting (2-3pm, 4301, Bldg. 240). Two major themes: First, to discuss the current activities wrt 1. What CPS folks are doing regarding exascale systems (A21, Frontier, and associated pre-exascale machines -- Perlmutter, Summit) 2. How much expertise we have in non-X86 HPC (GPUs, ARM, FPGA, exotica, --) 3. How much performance modeling expertise resides within the group Second, the extent of data-intensive computing expertise: 1. Work on in situ analytics 2. Complex workflows and edge services 3. Classical ML and DL methods Of course this is informal, but feel free to think through these points a little bit before the meeting. It's mostly for my education but also so we are all on the same page -- thanks in advance. Cheers Salman

Hi Everyone, As discussed in our meeting last week, it would be good to have a medium where topics can be discussed and we can track those discussions. All of you should have gotten an invitation from Basecamp, if you did not let me know. Basecamp is pretty intuitive to use and we won't be using it for any heavy-duty work. Basically, casual conversations on Campfire and use of the Message Board for more formal discussions. Documents can be shared in Docs & Files. Note that anything not meant to be public should be kept in the Argonne Box system (Basecamp is password protected, but just to be on the safe side). For hands-on work, we have a reservation with queue R.PERFORM on Cooley from 9am-12:30pm. To use the reservation, you’ll submit jobs to Cooley with $ qsub -A {performance, catalyst, datascience, etc.} -q R.PERFORM -t 180 -n 1 -I The setup for running the examples is here: /soft/compilers/clang-ykt/README on Cooley. It involves modifying your .soft.cooley, and then setting PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH. The details of how to run on Cooley will be mentioned again tomorrow, so no need to do anything now unless you want to. It is also possible to run the examples on JLSE using the nodes with GPUs. This FOA is focused on the co-design of learning systems and AI environments in support of DOE missions such as scientific research in the disciplines DOE funds, national security, oil & gas, grid, cyber, emergency response/preparedness, and cross-disciplinary insight that overlaps the DOE mission area. This is a lab-only announcement, for which labs are limited to leading no more than 2 proposals.
