Speaker: Dr. Xiuling Wang Talk Title: Offshore Floating Wind Turbine Simulation Abstract: Offshore wind energy exploitation has become an important development direction in wind energy industry. Estimated by the wind energy technology office (WETO), about 2000 GW of power can be accessed from offshore wind farms in the US coastal waters and the Great Lakes. Wind turbines are usually clustered in wind farms. The grouping of wind turbines brings two major issues: reduced power production and rotor life. Those wake effects can cause up 12% power loss on offshore conditions. It is critical for wind industry to simulate wind farm accurately and efficiently so as to optimize the layout of wind farm. Based on the summer research, the presentation will focus on: 1. Analyze the modeling techniques for floating offshore wind turbine; 2. Discuss the developed ocean surface wave model and ALM using Nek5000. PSE AI In Science and Engineering Workshop Announcement

All, Argonne’s Physical Sciences and Engineering (PSE) directorate will host a “PSE AI in Science and Engineering” workshop Sept. 5-6, 2019, at the APS Conference Center. The workshop is open to all Argonne staff, postdocs and students. REGISTER NOW!<https://cvent.me/NYzqg> Attendance is limited to 85 people. WORKSHOP DETAILS During the workshop, we will assess the current status of AI methods and approaches in sciences and engineering. Breakout sessions will be used to develop recommendations for short-term goals and suggestions for longer-term strategic goals, focusing on: 1) Areas in which Argonne can claim world leadership 2) Identifying bottlenecks and required resources 3) How to better leverage expertise and resources 4) How to build or encourage synergy and collaborations Further discussion will center on goals and strategies in the context of the DOE National Laboratories AI for Science Town Hall Meetings<https://web.cvent.com/event/b03cf98d-d350-4f66-805a-1a19f03bdcf8/summary>, one of which will be hosted by Argonne July 22-23, 2019. BREAKOUT SESSIONS Breakout questions are modeled after the DOE National Laboratories AI for Science Town Hall Meetings. Application Breakout Questions • In which “must-do” application areas is PSE behind and what is needed to catch up? • What are three to four significant opportunities in scientific domain areas in short-term (2-5 years) and longer term (5+ years) timeframes that combine Argonne’s unique expertise and capabilities and that address challenges articulated by the DOE? • For each opportunity identified: o What new advances are needed in modeling and simulation, as well as, experimental capabilities to address this challenge? o What are possible new roles for AI (e.g., machine learning, deep learning, statistical approaches, data analytics, automated control and other data-driven approaches) to address this challenge? What developments in AI are needed to realize these roles? o What are the opportunities for integrating modeling, simulation and experiments with AI to advance the scientific area? o What are the major sources of data and what scales are required to construct data-driven models with sufficient validity/accuracy? What problems need to be solved to acquire and manage the needed data? Cross-Cutting Breakout Questions • What are the three to five open questions that need to be addressed in order to maximally contribute to AI impact in the science and engineering domains? • For each open question identified: o To what extent is Argonne uniquely positioned to address this challenge? o What capabilities are imagined in the near-term (2-5 years) and the long-term (5+ years) timeframes? o What level of infrastructure and investment is needed to realize the impact? o What is needed from the domain sciences to push this technical area forward? Hello All, Dr. Fady Najjar (LLNL) and yours truly are co-chairing a focus session entitled "Exascale Computations of Complex Turbulent Flows” (focus session 40.3 in the APS-DFD annual meeting schedule) at the upcoming 72nd APS/DFD Annual Meeting, which will be in Seattle, Washington on November 23-26, 2019. Please note that the meeting will, for the first time, start around 3 pm on Saturday, November 23. We would like to take the opportunity to invite you and members in your extended group to submit abstracts for presentation in this focus session. The text of our abstract for this focus session is attached below. The deadline for submitting abstracts is August 1, 2019. Location: TCS 1406/1407 Speaker: Torsten Hoefler, Associate Professor, ETH Zurich Title: Performance Portability with Data-Centric Parallel Programming Abstract: The ubiquity of accelerators in high-performance computing has driven programming complexity beyond the skill-set of the average domain scientist. To maintain performance portability in the future, it is imperative to decouple architecture-specific programming paradigms from the underlying scientific computations. We present the Stateful DataFlow multiGraph (SDFG), a data-centric intermediate representation that enables separating code definition from its optimization. We show how to tune several applications in this model and IR. Furthermore, we show a global, data-centric view of a state-of-the-art quantum transport simulator to optimize its execution on supercomputers. The approach yields coarse and fine-grained data-movement characteristics, which are used for performance and communication modeling, communication avoidance, and data-layout transformations. The transformations are tuned for the Piz Daint and Summit supercomputers, where each platform requires different caching and fusion strategies to perform optimally. The rumors are true: I'm off to vanquish my nemesis, Snidely Whiplash. My wife was awarded a postdoc fellowship at McGill University in Montreal and is taking our baby with her. I like them, and she said I can come too, so at the end of July I will begin a leave of absence from Argonne and head off into the Great White North. I would like very much to have an opportunity to say goodbye and let you buy me a beer, so please come to Imperial Oak Brewing (http://www.imperialoakbrewing.com/ - 501 Willow Blvd, Willow Springs, Illinois 60480) on Thursday, July 18th after ~5PM. If you were at William Scullin's sendoff it's the same place, they have food trucks, non-alcoholic refreshments etc. It really has been an privilege to work with most of you.
