Hi Everyone, As you know there are two DOE ASCR FOAs out on AI/ML. One has a preproposal date for May 1 (Call 1: scientific ML for modeling and simulations), the other for May 6 (Call 2: decision support for complex systems). There is an associated BRN report that the calls refer to explicitly; this report identified 6 priority research directions, PRD 1 through 6. Call 1 is about PRD 5 and Call 2 about PRD 6. It is clear from the FOAs that they are about new methods and are both methods-oriented, coming from a mostly applied math/stats direction. Please read the FOAs closely; do not write a knee-jerk preproposal. These calls are not about funding some standard application or using/extending an existing framework. Thoughtful proposals are likely to be rewarded. Some people have talked to me about responding to these calls. I would strongly suggest a meeting with Stefan Wild to coordinate with the other computing divisions in CELS. Tim and I will reach out to him.
