We could also shorten it to: If the window was created with \mpifunc{MPI\_WIN\_ALLOCATE} or \mpifunc{MPI\_WIN\_ALLOCATE\_SHARED}, \mpifunc{MPI\_WIN\_FREE} will free the window memory that was allocated during window creation. ~Jim. Another option is to just add an "or \mpifunc{MPI\_WIN\_ALLOCATE\_SHARED}" to the first sentence, as below, but either version is fine with me. If the window was created with \mpifunc{MPI\_WIN\_ALLOCATE} or \mpifunc{MPI\_WIN\_ALLOCATE\_SHARED}, \mpifunc{MPI\_WIN\_FREE} will free the window memory that was allocated in \mpifunc{MPI\_WIN\_ALLOCATE} or \mpifunc{MPI\_WIN\_ALLOCATE\_SHARED}. Looks good. I agree that it must be fixed in this way since the window knows which process has allocated the contiguous memory. I assume that the sentence was simply forgotten when integrating MPI_Win_allocate_shared description. And it is consistent with MPI_Win_allocate. We certainly talked about MPI_WIN_FREE being how resources are released for MPI_WIN_ALLOCATE_SHARED and given the surrounding text, the intended behavior is pretty clear, so I think it's a simple oversight and we should fix it. This must be fixed because it is impossible for the user to free shared memory in a portable way. To not have this text is to create memory leaks in every code that calls MPI_WIN_ALLOCATE_SHARED. I find that POSIX implementations are far from standard in terms of (de)registration/(de)allocation/truncation. Linux, Mac and Blue Gene do not behave the same way, which is quite obnoxious. The other references are for Fortran, where a special Fortran version of MPI_WIN_SHARED_QUERY has to be supported or not supported since "baseptr" is returned by MPI_WIN_SHARED_QUERY.
