[Mpi3-rma] Target displacement in dynamic windows

Hi All, In today's meeting, we arrived at the following approach to addressing the target displacements issue for dynamic windows: The MPI 3.0 errata should include the following two statements: 1. For dynamic windows, the target_disp argument to RMA communication operations is not restricted to non-negative values. 2. Users are cautioned that displacement arithmetic can overflow in variables with MPI_Aint type and result in unexpected values on some platforms. This issue will be addressed in a future version of MPI. In MPI 3.1, we will look at two possible mechanisms for providing safe offset arithmetic: 1. MPI_Get_pointer(MPI_Aint address, void *ptr), which will allow a user to convert between addresses and pointers. 2. MPI_Auint -- an address integer which can represent the full range of MPI_Aint as a positive integer. This could be an unsigned integer, but for Fortran compatibiliy, it may need to be a singed integer that's larger than MPI_Aint. The following conversion functions would be provided: MPI_Get_auint(MPI_Aint addr, MPI_Auint *uaddr) MPI_Get_aint(MPI_Auint uaddr, MPI_Aint *addr) Please send comments. Thanks, ~Jim.

Some of us think that it would be advisable to have an errata draft *before* the meeting in Vienna next week (there may be a negligible chance of fixing the issues in MPI-3.0 this way). Nevertheless, we need to get together and discuss the issues. Thus, I'd propose to have a one-hour telecon to discuss those issues on either Monday or Tuesday next week (I know, short notice ... but the time is getting shorter). Though in *FIVE* years of asking for PGAS codes that we could run on Blue Waters, I've receive *ZERO* codes, and only one indirect, whose author declined to make his code available. (And others have had similar experiences.) While PGAS interoperability could be important, I see no evidence that people are migrating away from MPI to PGAS. If there is any quantifiable evidence, I'd like to see it. (I can only assume that Bill's reply is in response to Maik's email.) I can prepare the slide on PGAS/MPI interoperability as well, in consultation with Jim and Pavan. We've basically got all the material for this already, at least from the RMA perspective. If Maik is referring to Marc's proposal on UPC-MPI interop. at initialization, then someone else will have to take that. I didn't follow that effort closely enough. Sorry for not sending my RMA Request slide yet. I'll have everything done on Monday.
