In today’s systems, a single compute node is often equipped with multiple accelerators. Exploiting the maximum available parallelism out of such systems necessitates refactoring applications and using a programming approach that can make effective use of accelerators. Historically, the favored portable approaches, and the sole focus of our earlier workshops, were OpenMP offloading and OpenACC. Today, we understand there are other options and have extended the workshop to include the use of standard Fortran/C++, Sycl, DPC++, HIP, Kokkos, and Raja among several others that can provide scalable as well as portable solutions without compromising on performance. This workshop will highlight the improvements over the state-of-art through accepted papers and prompt discussion through keynotes and panels. The workshop aims to showcase all aspects of accelerator programming for heterogeneous systems such as innovative high-level language or library approaches, lessons learned while using directives or other portable approaches to migrate scientific legacy code to modern systems, and compilation and runtime scheduling techniques. WACCPD2021 will be virtual. In the past seven years of this workshop, WACCPD has been one of the major forums at SC to bring together programming model users, developers, and the tools community to share knowledge and experiences to tackle emerging complex parallel computing systems. Topics of interest for workshop submissions include (but are not limited to) - Application developers' experiences porting scientific applications to heterogeneous systems - Critical assessment of the benefits and limitations of minimal-maintenance portable programming approaches - Compiler and runtime support for current and emerging architectures - Prototypes of base language parallelism constructs for accelerators - Design and development of directives created for complex parallel patterns - Abstract handling of complex/heterogeneous memory hierarchies - Extensions to and shortcomings of current directives for heterogeneous systems - Compare and contrast high-level and lower-level abstractions with respect to performance, tuning, programmer productivity and overall analysis - Modeling, verification and performance analysis tools - Auto-tuning and optimization strategies - Using non-traditional HPC languages such as Julia or Python on heterogeneous systems - Parallel computing using hybrid programming paradigms, i.e. MPI+X - Asynchronous execution and scheduling (task-based approaches) - Scientific library interoperability with programming approaches for accelerators - Power/energy studies and solutions targeting accelerators or heterogeneous systems Workshop Important Deadlines - Paper Submission Deadline: August 27, 2021 AOE - Author Notification: October 4, 2021 AOE - Workshop Ready Deadline: October 18, 2021 AOE - Camera Ready Deadline: December 3, 2021 AOE (Note: This deadline is after your presentation) Best Paper Award The Best Paper Award will be selected on the basis of explicit recommendations of the reviewers and their scoring towards the paper's originality and quality. In order to be considered for the Best Paper Award, the authors must submit an Artifact Description appendix according to the reproducibility initiative of the SC21 technical papers. Paper Proceedings WACCPD papers will be peer-reviewed and selected for presentation at the workshop. The paper presented will be published as post-proceedings in Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) with Springer. The camera-ready version will be due after the workshop. The authors are expected to use this additional time for further refining their manuscript based on the feedback received from the workshop along with reviews from the peer-review process. For publication in LNCS, the Springer guidelines must be followed: Authors should consult Springer's authors' guidelines and use their proceedings templates, either for LaTeX or for Word, for the preparation of their papers. Springer encourages authors to include their ORCIDs in their papers. In addition, the corresponding author of each paper, acting on behalf of all of the authors of that paper, must complete and sign a Consent-to-Publish form. The corresponding author signing the copyright form should match the corresponding author marked on the paper. Once the files have been sent to Springer, changes relating to the authorship of the papers cannot be made. Authors can use the Springer LNCS template provided on Overleaf if they want to prepare their submission using that service. Hi Everyone, Please welcome Patrick Shriwise and Esteban (Steve) Rangel as new junior (RD2) staff members in CPS! Patrick obtained his PhD in nuclear engineering from Wisconsin and, until recently, was a CPS postdoc working with Paul Romano. Patrick has a deep interest in high performance scientific computing, multi-physics applications, and open source software engineering. He has experience with several methods for nuclear radiation transport with a specialty in application of these methods for CAD-based geometries. Steve's PhD is in computer science from Northwestern and he was an ALCF postdoc reporting to Adrian Pope (today is his first day in CPS). His research is focused on the development of performant and scalable applications for high-performance computing systems. Steve's interests are in the use of modern and emerging HPC programming models and architectures to best advance scientific frontiers. Salman

Reminder CPS Seminar Presentation via BlueJeans Videoconferencing Seminar Title: Modeling and Optimization of Plasma Material Interactions for Nuclear Energy and Photon Source Industrial Applications Speaker: Tatyana Sizyuk, Associate Director of CMUXE and Assistant Professor Affiliation: Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Date: Wednesday, July 21, 2021 Time: 10:00 am – 11:00 am Host: Tim Williams Abstract: Various computational methods integrated in multi-physics multi-dimensional packages were developed for the analysis and optimization of systems and devices in current vital applications. These packages are well-benchmarked with in-house and world-wide experiments. Results will be presented including, among others, plasma-material interactions in nuclear fusion reactors, development and optimization of photon sources for advanced nanolithography of future computer chips, and Water Window (WW) microscopy for biomedical applications. By integrating multi-physics with various numerical methods, e.g., Monte Carlo models for particle/matter interactions and photon transport with advanced deterministic methods for hydrodynamics and heat conduction in plasma, heat and particle diffusion, atomic segregation and desorption in plasma facing materials, we explained numerous recent experimental data and made predictions later confirmed in subsequent experiments. Simulated systems include laser- and discharge-produced plasmas for photon sources, electron and ion beam guns, and fusion devices, e.g., NSTX (Princeton), DIII-D (General Atomics), and ITER reactors. Challenges and development of multi-dimensional multi-physics packages and their optimizations for parallel calculations will also be discussed.
