They are seeking help getting that off the ground and are wondering if there are experts at Argonne who could assist with contributions such as curriculum development, teaching (on site), advising, etc. They have funds to cover at least one person full time (remaining as an Argonne employee, at least in the near to mid-term) and possibly more. Could I ask you to circulate this within your divisions and let me know if you have anybody who is interested in learning more? I promised AFA that I would give them a status update by next Tuesday. Thanks, Pat 214-MCS-1 : EXTREME COMPUTING Petascale computing and the emerging era of exascale computing pose numerous challenges, both from the underlying hardware architectures and from the many layers of software above it. MCS is exploring new approaches to system software, fault tolerance, and programming models for next-generation computers. The Extreme Computing area is heavily involved in research on operating systems, runtime, storage, programming models, algorithms, and libraries that will enable scientists to fully exploit advanced computer platforms. We are also building codesign teams - bringing together computer scientists, applied mathematicians and computational scientists to address these challenges. http://www.mcs.anl.gov/group/extreme-computing MCS:Mathematics and Computer Science Division 215-MCS-1 : DATA-INTENSIVE COMPUTING Growth in computer power is being dwarfed by a tremendous increase in data. Genome sequencing data alone has increased by more than 105 percent in less than six years. Large-scale simulations are producing petabytes and even exabytes of data that simply cannot be handled effectively or in a reasonable time by traditional methods. Activities such as Argonne's new Center for Computational Materials combines both large simulation and experimental data in a community database. Managing this data tsunami is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. In MCS, we are tackling this challenge by developing new techniques and tools for storing, transferring, accessing, visualizing, and analyzing extremely large datasets. Opportunity for someone to organize a minitutorial at CSE21, deadline is 12/13. Stefan -------- Forwarded Message -------- Dear colleagues, SIAM is seeking proposals for minitutorials to be conducted at the SIAM Conference on Computational Science and Engineering (CSE21), March 1-5, 2021 in Ft. Worth, TX, USA. The SIAM CSE conference enables in-depth technical discussions on a wide variety of major computational efforts on large-scale problems in science and engineering, fosters the interdisciplinary culture required to meet these challenges, and promotes the training of the next generation of computational scientists. SIAM CSE draws thousands of attendees from academia, industry, and research laboratories. A minitutorial offers attendees a great opportunity to learn in a hands-on fashion from experts, and is a good way to raise the visibility of new projects and topics. Subjects of recent minitutorials at SIAM CSE have included numerical libraries (libMesh, PETSc, PRIMME), simulation tools (Firedrake, MOOSe), as well as general productivity tools and best practices (git, licenses, productivity & sustainability, etc.). Proposals are encouraged for minitutorials on any topic relevant to research in computational science and engineering. Suggested areas include the themes listed at https://www.siam.org/conferences/cm/conference/cse21. Minitutorial proposals should be for material to fill either one or two sessions that will run concurrently with minisymposia. A minitutorial is not a minisymposium, and successful proposals will clearly describe how they intend to be not just informative, but instructive. Accepted minitutorials will be eligible for some reimbursements of travel expenses from SIAM. Reimbursements are capped at $1500 to be divided between presenters, with a cap of $500 per presenter.
