Applicant's name: Vijay Mahadevan Applicant's institution: ANL Applicant's division: MCS Project Name: NEMphyValidation Project title: Coupled multiphysics validation of research reactor experiments Associated funding: DOE-NE Other Systems: Science: The collaborative project between ANL (MCS, NE) and RPI university aims to better understand and validate the coupled reactor physics solvers being developed at Argonne under the SHARP project. SHARP utilizes PROTEUS (NE), Nek5000 (MCS) and MOAB (MCS) to drive the solver at scale. Project description: Over the past 5 years, a great deal of effort has been invested in developing and verifying the SHARP reactor physics toolkit at Argonne, funded by the NEAMS program. The high fidelity reactor modeling codes namely the neutron transport solver (PROTEUS) and CFD solver (Nek5000) have been proven to scale (both strong and weak) on BG/P, BG/Q, Fusion and Blues architectures. These codes are integrated through the MOAB unstructured mesh library that performs the solution projection between the dependent models. We want to model a detailed geometry description of the research reactor at RPI, generate discrete meshes for the codes, setup the problem configuration and run the coupled model in order to verify and validate the experimental results that are being accumulated at RPI. The meshes contain on average about 250K elements on the coarsest level and with angle/energy discretization in the neutronics solver, the total DoFs can exceed 10M. We also intend to do convergence studies with at least two more refined levels of physical scale resolution, which will exponentially increase the total cost - and hence need for more nodes/cores. Members from ANL/MCS (2), ANL/NE (2) and RPI (2) students who are working on the validation project will be using this allocation. We are trying to analyze the coupled model efficiency for validating real world experiments, which will involve both increase in resolution (weak scaling) and minimizing time to solution (strong scaling) studies. Hello, A yearly allocation for the LCRC cluster has been requested with the following updated information: Submitter/PI: Jeongseog Song Project Name: Prod_medi_isotopes Division: PHY and NE Project title: Medical Isotopes production at ANL Associated funding: DOE`s office of Science Other Systems: Science: We are going to produce medical isotopes such as 47Sc, 67Cu, 225Ac etc, via photo-nuclear reaction using Low Energy Accelerator Facility(LEAF) at ANL for medical application. Electron beam irradiates to the convertor(Ta or Al) then generate gamma ray by Bremsstrahlung. Resonance energy of gamma ray for photo-nuclear reaction is at 15 MeV, so electron energy should be ~ 40MeV. Reactions for producing medical isotopes are as follows. - 48Ti(gamma,p)47Sc - 68Zn(gamma,p)67Cu - 226Ra(gamma,p)225Ac Project description: In order to design the medical isotopes production target, we need to use PHITS(Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System) which can simulate heat deposit on the convertor and target and yield of wanted isotopes. PHITS is basically Monte Carlo simulation code for particle tracking and its production and to run batch job is efficient. We will develop production target based on simulation results. In order to install, compile and run batch job PHITS require fortran compiler(mpi90 or ifort), MPI, etc,. Since photo-nuclear cross section(gamma,p)for medical isotopes production is very low, no. of particles should be at least 1E+7 and ~100 batch jobs at once will be need. For examples, in case of C3TA design convertor thickness should be optimized to be able to sustain very large power deposit and gamma,p yield we are interested in is around 1e-8/source and convertor thickness is variable up to 6mm. To design target for each isotopes 30 of number of run is required. Hello, A yearly allocation for the LCRC cluster has been requested with the following updated information: Submitter/PI: Nicole Neveu Project Name: AWA-beam-dynamics Division: HEP Project title: High Accuracy Beam Dynamic Simulations Associated funding: Other Systems: Science: This project is focused on the simulation of electron accelerators. In particular, we will use OPAL-t which can be used to model beam lines, linacs, and rf photoinjectors. Realistic 3D beam dynamics simulations are used so that effects of couplers, vacuum pumping chambers, and other asymmetric features can be modeled. These simulations will help provide better predictions in experiments carried out at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator facility. Project description: The primary goal of this project is to simulate the two linear electron accelerators at the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) facility using the open source, parallel, particle in cell code OPAL-t. All runs will be parallel, or run concurrently so that none of the allocation is used on single core jobs. The cores used vary from 4, 8, or 16 cores and can vary from 1 minute to several core hours. Our most common run at this time is 16 cores for ~7-10 minutes. This may vary with projects at the AWA, and given Bebop architecture. Current efforts include development of new optimization techniques to minimize the number of simulations needed to optimize the parameters of each beam line (current techniques require 50k-100k simulation evaluations). Since the AWA is a variable charge machine, optimization must be done for each experiment with different charge values, and this can be time intensive. Other work includes ongoing efforts to include 3D effects which more accurately model the accelerators. Simulations carried out at LCRC will improve operating conditions at the AWA. The project will be used to fill HepSim database for physics and detector-performace studies for High-Luminosity LHC, ILC (International Linear Collider), VLHC ("Very Large Hadron Collider"), FCC-hh (“Future Circular Collider”) and other future circular colliders. Project description: HepSim is a public repository with Monte Carlo simulated events for particle-collision experiments. The HepSim repository was started at ANL during the US long-term planning study of the American Physical Society’s Division of Particles and Fields. HepSim includes Monte Carlo events after fast (“parametric”) and full (Geant4) detector simulations and event reconstruction.
