Hello, A yearly allocation for the LCRC cluster has been requested with the following updated information: Submitter/PI: Sibendu Som Project Name: OP_GCIsimulations Division: Energy Systems Project title: Gasoline Compression Ignition Medium Duty Multi-Cylinder Opposed Piston Engine Demonstration Associated funding: DOE ARPAE-E Other Systems: Achates Power Inc. (API), Delphi Science: Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software called CONVERGE will be used to model the Gasoline Compression Engine (GCI) combustion concept. Combustion calculations will be performed with chemical kinetics in every CFD cell to arrive at important engine performance and emissions characteristics. Gas exchange through the intake-cylinder-exhaust channel will also be modelled to perform scavenging calculations. Outputs from CFD simulations will be fed to a 1-D GT-Power model to build simplistic models. CFD work at Argonne will directly aid engine test cell experiments to narrow down proper operating conditions to run the engine. Project description: The objective of the project is to develop a multi-cylinder opposed piston (OP) engine operating on GCI. Engineering requirements with opposed pistons together with scientific challenges involved in efficiently combusting gasoline fuel in this engine architecture will be tackled using high-fidelity combustion simulations and massive optimization studies. Based on this objective, we now have a experimentally correlated CFD model which can predict the combustion behavior of the engine at across a wide variety of operating points. The goal in the current year is to apply this model to a slightly different design of the same engine, evaluate the combustion characteristics and in the process use design of experiments to optimize the engine design and operation. The new engine is expected to demonstrate a 30% improvement in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) over conventional light-duty diesel engines. The combination of opposed-piston (OP) and gasoline compressio n ignition (GCI) technologies has the potential to overcome current cost and efficiency challenges and significantly reduce U.S. petroleum consumption and emissions.
