A number of existing software models will be used to simulate tracer gas and particle releases and the movement of those throughout the building, outdoor, and subway environments in major metropolitan areas. The data produced by these model runs will be analyzed to support decisions for optimum sensor locations and best emergency procedures. Project description: A number of models are used at Argonne for simulating air movement and air quality within certain environments. The CONTAM model from NIST simulates air movement in buildings. Argonne’s Below Ground Model (BGM) simulates air movement in subways. Los Alamos National Laboratory’s QUIC simulates air movement in outdoor urban environments. These models have a large number of inputs that can be configured, such as weather conditions, pedestrian traffic, train traffic, building structure, and ventilation systems. For this project, we intend to create scenarios for a number of major metropolitan areas. For each metropolitan area, a large number of scenarios will be produced, varying the input parameters for each one. It is anticipated that many tens of thousands of individual scenarios will be produced. These scenarios are to be run on the LCRC cluster using Swift/K (or Swift/T) scripts, producing a large dataset to be moved offline for analysis with other tools. The LCRC resources will only be used for running the simulations, not for generating scenario input data. We require the Intel Fortran compiler and the Swift/K package. These already exist and have been used by the team on the Blues software environment. Since all three models are non-parallel models, almost all jobs run as part of this project will be non-parallel. However, there will be some investigation into creating a more parallel version of the BGM. The team size is expected to be 3-4 members.
