Colin: The only record I find of this issue is bug 1307 in our bugzilla: http://bugzilla.mcs.anl.gov/accessgrid/show_bug.cgi?id=1307 which was filed by you. I don't have a solution for the problem and unfortunately don't have much time to look at it presently, but if you dig into it I'd be willing to help out where I can (I've been involved in building the Gentoo ebuilds to date). I can grep inside those binaries and indeed they cantain references to /var/tmp/portage.

Has anyone dealt with this issue before I go digging through the globus-data-managment-client build scripts?
