Hello Everyone: I am sending this email to let you know that Barry Smith, Argonne Distinguished Fellow in MCS, has retired. He has been thinking about retirement for some time and decided to make it effective last Friday, June 5. Barry will remain engaged as an Argonne Associate and focus on research and development of PETSc. I first met Barry in the mid 1990s when I was a faculty member at Northwestern and had a guest appointment in MCS. In 1994, Barry rejoined Argonne (after having been at Argonne as the Wilkinson Fellow from 1990 to 1992), at which time he focused on PETSc 2.0. Now 26 years later, PETSc is well recognized and used by many DOE applications. In 2018, the 1997 paper about PETSc was recognized as one of the 40 “cream-of-the-crop” research projects changing the face of science. I will miss Barry being fully engaged in MCS, but am happy that he will remain engaged with PETSc. Barry has requested that we have the retirement celebration when we return to “normal” operations. To reach Barry, please use the following email address: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>.
