Q&A Session for BES-ASCR SciDAC Call
Dear Colleague, BES and ASCR have just issued a call for proposals in the area of SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERY THROUGH ADVANCED COMPUTING: PARTNERSHIPS IN BASIC ENERGY SCIENCES. Pre-applications are due to DOE on January 19th. However, only 2 preproposals may be submitted by Argonne and thus there will be a down-selection process. Quantum Phenomena of many-particle systems driven far from equilibrium. Applications are sought that drive and manipulate quantum effects such as coherence, entanglement, and novel states of matter by going beyond the use of existing quantum-based methods in their traditional regimes. 1. Predictive Control of Reaction Pathways for chemical mechanisms in complex non-equilibrium and field-driven environments important in synthesis of materials and chemicals, and deconstruction of macromolecular structures such as plastics for polymer upcycling. Background information about the SciDAC call and SciDAC in general (from the two previous Townhall meetings) can be found in the Argonne Box at https://anl.box.com/s/wna7w130ouxu3uqotkzlsfcpc1z5guu7 It seems clear that targeting exascale computing capabilities will be an important component of a response to the FOA: it is important to consider this aspect early on and to involve appropriate computational expertise in the team. There will be a down-select process that is currently being worked out as Argonne can only submit two pre-proposals as lead institution. The deadline for submitting preproposals for internal screening is January 11, 2021, and the deadline for submitting preproposals to DOE is Jan. 19, 2021. The pre-application may not exceed two pages (excluding cover page and tables of PIs and COIs), when printed using standard letter-size (8.5 x 11-inch) paper with 1-inch margins (top, bottom, left, and right). The font must not be smaller than 11 point. Figures and references, if included, must fit within the two-page limit. After the description of the proposed research, include a listing of individuals known to be conflicted from serving as a reviewer, as required for the preapplication. If you are planning a pre-proposal as lead PI, please include some information (a paragraph or so) about the target science as well as potential team members. We are available to help you with the pre-proposal process, in particular with identifying ASCR partners as well as SciDAC Institutes to which the pre-proposals should make strong connections. Since only two proposals can be led by Argonne, we also suggest reaching out to external collaborators and being part of proposals led by other institutions, if this is appropriate.
