This is a great opportunity to excite K-12 students about careers in computing, to foster our next generation of computing@Argonne staff.    

Some staff have participated in the past and really enjoyed the interactions with students.

The request is for 2 hours of your time during the week of December 7-11 for Hour of Code.

The deadline to register has been extended to next Wednesday, 11/18.

Hi everyone,

Computer Science Education Week is coming December 7-11!  Which means the annual Hour of Code Initiative is upon us.  This year we will be running it virtually.

For those that have not participated in the past, during Computer Science Education Week we send out computer scientist role models to regional elementary, middle and high schools to get them excited about coding and careers in computer science.  This year we will do the engagement virtually instead of physically visiting schools.

IMPORTANT! NEW for this year:

• We have partnered with Chicago Public Schools Office of Computer Science. Therefore there will be an option of volunteering directly through them if you want to be matched with a Chicago Public School OR through us if you want to be matched with a non-CPS school.  You can also volunteer for both if you would like 😊.  Either way, your volunteer hours will of course be counted!

Notes:

No matter if you volunteer through CPS or through our form, your responsibilities as a volunteer will be the same and are as follows:

· Connect virtually to assigned school to serve as a computer science expert. 

· Give 10 minute presentation about computer science at Argonne, Fermi or UChicago and about yourself (we will provide a template if you don’t already have one)

· Engage virtually with students while they are participating in Hour of Code activities.

• The teacher will lead the students in a coding or computer science activity, you are not expected to teach or facilitate any activity.  Simply help them with the activity as appropriate.

· We ask that you donate a minimum of 2 hours or 2 class periods to your assigned classroom/school.

• Important notes about CPS form:
  • Last question on first page, you may respond “yes” to utilizing google meets.  You will not be setting up the meeting so you are allowed to connect via google meets since it is set-up by an external entity.
  • On second page the question that refers to “how do you want to engage?”, please select “Teaching Assistant” (as this is the same as what we have described above).
