There are several activity and discussion groups going on, there's a new one starting today and others are summarized below.
All are welcome, please contact the organizer if you're interested.

From Sven:
Together with some summer students, we are organizing an informal
study group on Optimization with Chance Constraints, which are a
form of uncertain constraints that must hold with a user-defined
probability. We are meeting twice a week on Tuesdays at
1:30-2:30pm in 2172 and on Fridays at 9am in 1178.
I have created a small folder with randomly selected papers on
chance constraints, see https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1HRCimO7shJFwgAEOCO658Vdm8icJ-XQ4?usp=sharing
. At today's meeting, I'll introduce chance constraints, talk
about some simple example, outline approaches, and we can then
decide what papers to read next.
Please let me know if you (or one of your students) is interested
in listening or participating in this group (so that we can book a
larger room if needed).

| Numerical Linear
Algebra Discussion Group
|
Status: | Active |
| When: | Every Monday, 1-2PM; Bldg 240 (room can vary, we miss the occasional week) | |
| Contact/Organizer: | Anthony Austin | |
| Since: | February 2018 | |
| Most recent known meeting: | 6/4/2018 | |
| About: | Intends to be a useful and fun group that meets periodically to discuss numerical linear algebra. These informal discussions would be didactic in nature (rather than "research-oriented"---you wouldn't need to be an NLA expert to participate) and would aim at refreshing our memories on basic numerical analysis tricks and handy features of matrix decompositions that are useful when solving problems and writing code. | |

| Leadership
Reading Group
|
Status: | Active |
| When: | Monthly, every 3rd Wednesday, 11:30-12:30 | |

| Most recent known meeting: | 5/16/2018 | |
| About: |
A monthly reading group on interesting books on leadership, teams, and organizational health that are relevant to our national laboratory environment. The group rotates facilitators so that everyone has a chance to lead the discussion. |

Data Science journal club
|
Status: | Active |
| When: | Monthly, subscribe to list for details | |
| Contact/Organizer: | Noah Paulson & Ganesh Sivaraman | |
| Since: | November 2017 | |
| Most recent known meeting: | 2/23/2018 | |
| About: |
Journal club focused on HPC and data science/machine learning. The goal of the club is to learn more about using machine learning/data science and HPC for scientific applications. We plan to do this by reading current literature and having presentations about machine learning/data science/HPC theory and applications of the theory. The goal is to discuss an article or have a presentation about current research every two weeks. This is meant so that everyone will learn something, regardless of their previous level of expertise. It's an informal group, so people only present something if they want to. |
