 Members
of the HACC team in ALCF, CPS, and HEP divisions received a very large allocation – Mira's swan song – to carry out “The Last Journey” cosmological simulation. One of the world's largest cosmology runs, Last Journey occupied all of Mira and was completed in
September, 2019. The outputs of this simulation will be the basis for applying detailed models that populate the simulation's matter distribution (localized clumps, called ‘halos’) with galaxies and create synthetic sky maps that will be used by many sky surveys,
such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), the Dark Energy Survey Instrument (DESI), and CMB-S4. The simulation parameters were based on the current best-fit Planck cosmology, the run consisted of evolving ~1.24 trillion particles in a (5025 Mpc)3
volume and included a full on-the-fly analysis suite to create particle light cone outputs out to redshift, z=10, halo catalogs at 101 snapshots, and down-sampled particle snapshots. Information needed to create the history of structure formation (including
galaxy formation) is captured by the construction of halo merger trees in post-processing. Finally, in order to follow the development of substructure over time, we have stored halo ‘core’ particles – particles that sample the stable central region of halos
as they undergo mergers – for all analysis time snapshots. One major simulation aim was to exercise HACC at scale with the full analysis suite turned on to mimic the upcoming exascale challenge runs on Aurora and Frontier.
First-level analysis tasks have been carried out, while others are in progress. We have measured the density fluctuation power
spectra at different redshifts, the distribution of halo masses at different redshifts and for different mass definitions, and halo shape parameters. We have also created the first visualizations of the simulations, including time evolution movies (shown at
SC19). The image shows the cosmic web structure consisting of voids, filaments, and halos, in a very small piece of the simulation at the final timestep.
