From: Kazutomo Yoshii <[email protected]> Investigating thermal and power characteristics of the Haswell processors Kazutomo Yoshii Kazutomo Yoshii We will explore new features in Intel Haswell processors that particularly affects thermal and power behavior, which will create the performance variability. Its fully integrated voltage regulator (FIVR) will provide lower switching latencies and finer granularity than before, however, FIVR itself also becomes a possible heat source. Its turboboost, which is a thermal-aware mechanism, poses a new challenge: the gap between the TDP frequency and the turboboost frequency is more than 1 GHz on some model, and the frequency range for FPU intensive workloads is introduced. We will port our thermal and power monitoring software for Haswell and explore new control features introduced in Haswell.
